His dissertation research focuses on the ways in which Muslim Americans living in North Carolina have sought security by asserting various rights in the wake of the murder of three Muslims in Chapel Hill in 2015. In the interview, he talks about his time interviewing various members of the community and his observations of how mosques and other spaces have adapted since the tragedy.
