Jazz guitar legend Calvin Keys stops by KALX Live! for an in-studio performance and interview this Saturday, Feb 11th at 10pm with host DJ Nickel Hardaway. Keys has been a staple of the Bay Area jazz scene for nearly 50 years, first recording for Oakland’s eminent Black Jazz label. Since relocating in 1975, he has played in countless live and recorded sessions in and around the area, on top of teaching and mentoring at Jazz Camp West and the Oakland Public Conservatory. His storied career has seen him release over a dozen albums as a leader, including the celebrated “Shawn-Neeq” and “Proceed with Caution”, as well as 2022’s “Simply Calvin” and “Blue Keys”. He has also recorded and performed with visionaries such as Ray Charles, Ahmad Jamal, Pharoah Sanders, Taj Mahal, and Bobby Hutcherson. In 2023, Keys remains at the top of his game, continuing to deliver his trademark blend of power and finesse to local audiences along with an upcoming record planned with godson Terrace Martin.
