Montreal-based dream pop singer/songwriter Flower Face (a.k.a. Ruby McKinnon) recently toured through the Bay Area to play the Rickshaw Stop and dahlia was there to get the latest. Tune in on Thursday, November 5th at 4pm to hear the conversation.
Fans last heard from McKinnon with her 2024 full-length album, Girl Prometheus, a record steeped in gothic longing, intimate confessions, and stirring arrangements. Now, McKinnon returns with her new upcoming album, Kill The Muse, out February 5th, 2027 via Nettwerk.
Kill The Muse was written largely while McKinnon was in the studio recording Girl Prometheus, and finds building upon the sound and emotional landscape of that album. Where Girl Prometheus found McKinnon excavating the wreckage of a difficult breakup, Kill The Muse interrogates McKinnon’s own impulse to make art around her worst moments, pushing her to write from new perspectives. “I felt like, ‘I’m still feeling so creative, so how about I go put myself in some really bad situations so I can be inspired,” she says. “‘I need to damage myself further in order to create more.’ No matter what I did, or how much I hurt myself, it all felt worth it if I could get a song out of it.”
