On the next Fiat Lux Redux, Tuesday, December 23 at 9 AM, UC Berkeley Professor Hany Farid, a pioneer and leading expert in the field of digital forensics joins California Magazine Editor-in-Chief Pat Joseph onstage at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive as part of the ongoing lecture series, ‘California Live!’ to discuss what the growing onslaught of mis- and disinformation portends for our society and what we can do to manage it.
Hany Farid is a pioneer in the field of digital forensics, and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in two departments: Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS) and the School of Information where his research focuses on digital forensics, forensic science, misinformation, image analysis, and human perception.
The conversation focuses on the growing threat of deepfakes and disinformation in the digital age; the demise of trust and the threat to veracity; democratized access and manipulation that is easily accessible to billions of people; and the struggle for regulation and methods for authenticating media to keep up.
This episode was originally part of the “California Live!” series produced by California magazine and the Cal Alumni Association and The Edge, a UC Berkeley podcast series from California magazine that explores cutting-edge and often controversial ideas in science, technology, and society with the help of campus experts.
Fiat Lux Redux presents previously aired lectures, conversations, and podcasts originating on the campus of UC Berkeley every other Tuesday from 9am to 9:30am. These often-lengthy original programs have been edited to a 30-minute format by experienced KALX producers. The show’s name, Latin for “Let there be light”, is a reference to the University of California’s motto, which is also Fiat Lux. The show’s goal is to provide listeners with a window into the intellectual and cultural life of UC Berkeley and to showcase the wide range of subjects and diversity of thought and ideas that are present at UC Berkeley.
