Join Excuse My French on Wednesday, September 17th at 1pm to hear his recent interview with Montreal based jazz & blues singer-songwriter, Dominique Fils-Aimé, ahead of her shows at SFJAZZ on September 18th & 19th.
JUNO award winning musician, Dominique Fils-Aimé, puts the history of African-American musical culture into the heart of her work, reflecting on the social realities that influenced the genres of blues, jazz and soul. Her trilogy shed light on the history of Afro American music, inspired by soul icons such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Etta James.
In her fourth album entitled, Our Roots Run Deep, which won the 2024 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year and the Felix Award (ADISQ Gala) for Jazz Album of the year, Dominique Fils-Aimé shapes her latest work with a loose, dreamlike narrative structure that tells a story of growth. For Dominique, nature acts as an anchor—a source of inspiration that provides her with metaphors to express the unique but interconnected journey of a human being.
Fils-Aimé’s most recent album, Live At The Montreal International Jazz Festival, beautifully showcases how Dominique’s music translates seamlessly into a live setting. Whether in the studio or on stage, Fils-Aimé’s magnetic presence forms an enveloping sonic headspace, where audiences all over the world can bask in her innovative arrangements.
