On Monday, September 8th at 4pm, Ears of Maize airs his recent talk with singer-songwriter, John McCrea of the band CAKE ahead of their upcoming performance at this year’s Sound Summit Festival at the Mountain Theater in Mount Tamalpais State Park on September 13th.
Tune in to hear all about McCrea’s early love of radio, what he’s currently listening to, and where he finds inspiration for his own music.
Originally formed as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s defiant self-reliance and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves with no evident peers in sound or perspective. While seamlessly blending numerous genres and influences, CAKE issues forth a sound and vision unlike any other band.
The band is currently at work on their ninth album due for release during autumn 2025.
Staged in a 4,000-seat natural stone amphitheater atop Mount Tam, the annual Sound Summit gathering is produced by Roots & Branches Conservancy to raise funds for Mount Tamalpais State Park. Over the past decade, Sound Summit has generated more than $300,000 in support of the mountain, funding an array of meaningful projects from trail restorations and historic building renovations to fire prevention, water conservation, emergency resources, visitor services, and more.
Joining CAKE for the festival will be Alvvays, Stand!: A Bay Area Celebration of Sly & The Family Stone (ft. Taj Mahal, Narada Michael Walden, Martin Luther McCoy, & More), Real Estate, and Wolf Jett.
