Interview with New Wave director Elizabeth Ai

Posted on April 7, 2025

New Wave documentary interview poster for KALX DJs Tiger Lily and Ecofreak with Elizabeth Ai. April 9 at 5pm
Filmmaker Elizabeth Ai was on a mission to excavate an untold story of rebellious punks in the chaotic world of ’80s Vietnamese new wave until she rediscovered a hidden past. On Wednesday, April 9th, at 5pm, join her with DJs Tiger Lily and ec0fr3ak as they chat about mile-high hair, synthesized music, underground parties, and her documentary New Wave.

You can see the documentary for yourself at three separate screenings this same week in the Bay Area. The film screens Wednesday 4/9 at BAMPFA in Berkeley, Friday 4/11 at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, and Saturday 4/12 at Oakland’s Westlake Middle School. If you already want to find out more about the film’s score, head over here.
