This Tuesday, September 3rd at 9am, Fiat Lux Redux features Justice Sonia Sotomayor in conversation with Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky at the Herma Hill Kay Memorial Lecture that took place on Monday, January 29, 2024, at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall.
Now in her 15th year on the Supreme Court, Sotomayor describes her time in Yale Law School; the role of dissents, scholarship, and oral arguments in her decisions; the value of juridical clerkships; the importance of unplugging from work and connecting with friends; and much more. At a time of disagreements with some of her fellow justices as well as her blistering dissents to majority opinions that she believes will erode fundamental rights, Sotomayor calls mutual respect and civility the hallmarks of Court culture.
Fiat Lux Redux presents previously aired lectures, conversations, and podcasts originating on the campus of UC Berkeley every other Tuesday from 9am to 9:30am. These often-lengthy original programs have been edited to a 30-minute format by experienced KALX producers. The show’s name, Latin for “Let there be light”, is a reference to the University of California’s motto, which is also Fiat Lux. The show’s goal is to provide listeners with a window into the intellectual and cultural life of UC Berkeley and to showcase the wide range of subjects and diversity of thought and ideas that are present at UC Berkeley.
