Fiat Lux Redux: Jeff Goodell

Posted on September 23, 2024

Man, wearing a blue shirt and jeans, sitting in front of a window with hands folded.

The ten warmest years on record have all occurred since 2014 and 2023 was the warmest year on record. Startlingly, 2024 is on target to be even hotter than 2023.

In the next episode of Fiat Lux Redux, Tuesday, October 1 at 9:00 AM, environmental journalist and Berkeley alumnus Jeff Goodell talks about his latest book, The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet (2023, Little, Brown, and Co.) and the potentially lethal effects that rising temperatures will have on our lives and on our planet, and what we can do to prepare for it. Goodell has been reporting on the climate for more than 15 years—as a contributing writer for Rolling Stone magazine and in a series of highly regarded books about climate change. Here he speaks in late 2023 with host Leah Worthington and editor in chief Pat Joseph of The Edge, produced by California magazine and the Cal Alumni Association.

Fiat Lux Redux presents previously aired lectures, conversations, and podcasts originating on the campus of UC Berkeley every other Tuesday from 9am to 9:30am. These often-lengthy original programs have been edited to a 30-minute format by experienced KALX producers. The show’s name, Latin for “Let there be light”, is a reference to the University of California’s motto, which is also Fiat Lux. The show’s goal is to provide listeners with a window into the intellectual and cultural life of UC Berkeley and to showcase the wide range of subjects and diversity of thought and ideas that are present at UC Berkeley.
