On the next Fiat Lux Redux, April 14 at 9AM, Finding Space podcast host Tracie Allen, the Access and Innovation Strategist at the Center for Teaching & Learning at UC Berkeley, speaks with Professor Emily Nusbaum, a core Disability Studies instructor at UC Berkeley about the concept of “collective access” within the university classroom.
Rather than treating disability accommodations as private, bureaucratic transactions between a student and an institution, Emily Nusbaum explores how to co-design access practices with students from day one by understanding that slowing down is a pedagogical strength rather than a weakness. She stresses the importance of moving beyond a “checklist” or compliance-based approach toward a culture of care and disability justice.
Finding Space is a podcast produced by Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) within UC Berkeley’s Division of Undergraduate Education that aims to amplify disability justice and reimagine what access, equity, and belonging look like in higher education. It features stories and interviews with students, educators, and staff from the disability community and serves as a resource for faculty and staff to move beyond basic legal requirements and toward genuine inclusion.
Fiat Lux Redux presents previously aired lectures, conversations, and podcasts originating on the campus of UC Berkeley every other Tuesday from 9am to 9:30am. These often-lengthy original programs have been edited to a 30-minute format by experienced KALX producers. The show’s name, Latin for “Let there be light”, is a reference to the University of California’s motto, which is also Fiat Lux. The show’s goal is to provide listeners with a window into the intellectual and cultural life of UC Berkeley and to showcase the wide range of subjects and diversity of thought and ideas that are present at UC Berkeley.
This episode of the Finding Space podcast “Pedagogy of the Pause” was released on January 26, 2026, and edited by Paula Burch for KALX Berkeley. If you have questions or comments about Fiat Lux Redux, contact lisa.katovich@gmail.
