On the Saturday, June 27th edition of KALX Live! we have Devoted Fans, hosted by Sunspot. Initially formed as a vehicle for Ryan Lescure to release songs that didn’t quite fit the mold of Lavender Blush, San Francisco-based group Devoted Fans blend indie pop, noise pop, and shoegaze to create something entirely different.
Since the release of 2025’s Hyper Devotion LP, Devoted Fans has blossomed beyond a solo project into a fully collaborative effort. The group now consists of Ryan Lescure, Jim Rivas, Jules Vu, Serena Joshi, Mike Keegan, and Julie Lynn. Members of Devoted Fans have played in other notable groups such as Rocketship, Slowness, Moonbeams, and LSD and the Search for God.
Devoted Fans was initially a way for the band leader Lescure to both demo for their other group, Lavender Blush, but then also to release some songs that were totally authentic without any sort of expectation to be shoegaze or be within any sort of genre of music. The idea was to make free-flowing songs and Devoted Fans was a vehicle for doing that, without the intention of turning it into a live act necessarily.
But one thing that pushed the music in that direction was Lescure’s friendship with Jim Rivas, who is an incredible drummer, and drummer for the band. When Lescure first started making music and getting into the shoegaze indie pop world, there was this record, Rocketship’s A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness, that was like a religious text for him. Jim Rivas is the drummer [for Rocketship] on this record, and his drumming is incredible. It adds so much to these songs.
A few years after discovering this record, Lescure was blown away when Jim had heard his music and liked it. Rivas sent Lescure an email wanting to play some shows together with some of the groups that he was playing with at the time. Over the years, Lescure has played with a bunch of Jim’s groups and he’s incredible drummer, wonderful person, great friend. Lescure knew that if musical project Devoted Fans was going to be turned into a live act, Jim would need to be the drummer.
So there you go. You learned a little bit more about the origin of the band. Come check band out and listen to their music on KALX Live! on June 27th at 9pm to midnight.
